Sha Fei and Wartime Photography
Our digital photography project reinterprets Sha Fei (1912-1950)'s documentation of the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). Digitally mapping the settings of his photographs, which are deeply intertwined with the narratives of war and the journeys of soldiers, provides a distinctive and comprehensive view. It reveals how photography chronicled the war, moving beyond the conventional portrayal of ruins and casualties as depicted by photographers like the 19th-century British Felice Beato (1832-1909) in Asia. A spatial and visual narrative of Sha Fei's work is re-envisioned through a digital framework, bringing his historical insights into a modern perspective.
